3 Ways To Keep Your Glow After Baby

Congrats on your new baby! I’m sure if you’re reading this you probably have had or are about to have your new little one in your arms. Maybe you’ve had beautiful, glowing skin all along or maybe not. But don’t worry, every mama can achieve and keep their glow after having a baby. So let’s talk about that magical pregnancy glow and how to keep it once baby arrives!

Make self-care a priority

So much changes during pregnancy & after your baby’s birth. Between being sleep-deprived and totally obsessed with a new baby in the family, mamas tend to let their self care get pushed to the back burner. That euphoric feeling can quickly turn into a blur of 3 am feedings and you begin to wonder how in the world am I going to take care of my baby and myself? It’s okay, we’ve all been there. But it’s important to set aside some time for self-care.

  • Be kind to yourself. It’s tough to deal with our post-pregnancy bodies and accept change. I remember looking at myself in the mirror and feeling like my body was ruined. But just like it took a while to grow your baby, it can take a while to get back to normal, physically and mentally. Don’t rush it. Even if your new normal is different from the old normal, be kind to yourself and give it time mama.
  • Get Rest. Your body just went through a lot, mentally & physically! The laundry can wait. The dishes can wait. Take the nap! I struggled with this because I always felt like when my baby was sleeping, I could get all of my other responsibilities done. But it left me more depleted and miserable. I had to learn to let things wait while I was adjusting to newborn life.
  • Ask For Help. I’ll admit, I hated asking for help. But remember the saying, “It takes a village?” Well that’s still true and you shouldn’t feel bad for accepting help when you need it. Let family and friends help as much as they want. You need this time to rest, so you can heal and settle into your new life as a mama.
  • Eat Healthy. Nourishing your body with the right foods should be a priority in your self care routine. Eating healthier will give you more energy to endure the day, and the long night ahead of you! Drink water instead of sugary, carbonated drinks to boost your skin health and get rid of toxins in your body!
  • Get Out. But don’t rush yourself back into your regular routine. Getting out in the first few months can help so much with baby blues. So even if you just walk up your driveway to check the mail, get outside! Take your baby for a walk, ask a friend to meet you for lunch, or grab a coffee from Starbucks.
  • Treat Yourself. Once you’re ready, or when grandma comes to visit, schedule something for yourself. It doesn’t have to be a full day, but maybe get your nails done, or run a few errands. Anything to make you feel good about yourself again! I love going to Target and walking through every aisle of the store with my hubby! It’s like a mini date!
  • Have A Date Night. It’s so important to be and stay connected with your husband during this time. Sometimes it’s hard to get a date night out with a new baby at home, or to even feel like going anywhere, so I made a list of 11 date nights in HERE. But if you feel up to it, get dressed up and go to your favorite restaurant, a movie, or even just a trip to Target!
  • Establish A Routine. Find a routine or schedule that works for your family and stick with it. I know schedules aren’t for everyone, but they work great for our family. I’m very much a Type A mom. I love planning out our days, having chore charts, and feeding my baby girl at the same time everyday. It keeps our chaos as a family of six organized and allows me to plan time for myself. But your day doesn’t have to look like mine, find what works for you and your family!

Use the right products for your skin type

Do you have dry skin? Normal? Maybe oily, or a combination? It’s important to use the right products for your personal skin type, to keep your glow after baby.

  • Normal skin is neither too dry, nor too oily. It has fine pores and a soft + smooth texture. Sometimes after a baby, normal can turn into dry skin.
  • Dry skin ranges from skin that is a little bit drier than normal, through very dry skin to extremely dry skin.
  • Oily skin tends to come from hormonal changes and stress. Which totally makes sense after having a baby!
  • Combination Skin is characterized by an oily T-zone(forehead, chin + nose), enlarged pores, and normal to dry cheeks.

SPF is your BFF

I have sensitive, dry skin since having my babies. I cleanse my face with CeraVe everyday, and exfoliate with a charcoal scrub twice a week. To keep my skin from breaking out, I use witch hazel as a toner three or four times a week. I finish my routine with a moisturizer. Don’t forget, SPF is your BFF! I try to remember to wear a lightweight sunscreen everyday! If you’re not sure which products you should use, search on Amazon for each product and add for “your skin type” to each product!

Never sleep in your make up

I love how clean my face feels when I wake up so I always, always, always wash my face before bed. Sleeping in make up can cause eye irritation, increase wrinkles, cause breakouts, dry out your skin, break your eyelashes, and even clog your eyelash follicles! Gross! Just take Rachel Hollis’ advice and wash your face!

Why is my skin so bad after pregnancy?

During pregnancy a lot of things change, so we should expect some changes after pregnancy too. Acne is triggered by hormonal changes. Hormones are all over the place during and after pregnancy. If your skin becomes dry, the dead skin layers can build up causing bacteria to get under the cracks & layers and cause breakouts. The opposite is also true. Oily skin clogs pores and causes acne. Some oil is good though. It’s what gives us that shiny glow on our skin and in our hair. But too much causes breakouts!
